Sports Illustrated’s Rare 1000mm Zeiss Lens Used at the World Series Could Be Yours for $30,000
If you’ve ever dreamed of working for Sports Illustrated and photographing the MLB World Series, keep dreaming; it’s not likely to happen.
But, a lens currently on sale over at eBay will make a small part of your dream come true.
The rare Carl Zeiss 1000mm f/5.6 Mirotar lens has been used solely by SI and is one of only 28 made.
Most of you are probably reaching for your wallets to whip out the request $30,000, but please note this lens has been modified for Nikon F mount, so curb your enthusiasm Canon and Sony shooters.
The lens is being sold by Roberts Camera, who says it has been fully tested as operational.
Other than that the lens is rated in Good condition, meaning it is in 70-79% of original condition, the listing states.
As one would expect, the lens returned from the battlefield (or baseball field) with the scars to prove it. These include “heavy wear and may have major cosmetic blemishes”, as well as scratches on the front element. Buyers are requested to see the photos for specifics.
Roberts do not list the lens’ weight, but an official specs document from Zeiss has it listed at approx. 16.5 kg. Other than the lens the happy buyer, who will probably be sleeping on the sofa for a while, will also get the pictured carrying case.
If money does grow on trees where you live, and you’ve got no interest in Sports Illustrated or the MLB World Series, there’s another Zeiss 1000mm Mirotar being sold on eBay for $50,000.
Whichever of the two lenses you opt for, feel free to try and to beat the P900’s monster zoom photos of the International Space Station.
